4 Tips For Keeping Your Business Data Safe

by Deann Collins

As a modern business, keeping your important documents and information safe is not longer a matter of locking up the file cabinet at night. It is now a matter of cyber-security, since the majority of your documents and important information is most likely stored directly on your company's computer network, computers, the cloud and on various programs servers. Here are a few tips that will help you keep your company information safe in the digital age.

#1 Back Up Everything

The first thing you need to do if you want to keep your data safe is back everything up. You need to keep a duplicate copy of your data in a separate location from where the rest of you data is stored.

There are multiple ways that you can back up your data and information. You can back up the information that is on your computer on a physical external hard drive. Or you can back up your information on a separate cloud storage account that you use just for baking up your information.

The key to backing up your data is to make sure that you back it up often, especially if your digital information is constantly changing. If you don't back your information up often, it will not matter that you backed it up if everything that you have saved is out of date.

#2 Make Your Wireless Network Secure

One easy way for a hacker to gain access to your company's information is by hacking into your company's wireless network. Have your IT department create a network that is secure and encrypted.

You should also have your Wi-Fi network set up so that your router does not share the name of your businesses network, this will make it harder for outsiders to even gain access to your wireless network. Additionally, make sure that your Wi-Fi network is password protected and make sure that the password is updated on a regular basis to prevent outsiders from breaking into your network.

#3 Set-Up A Hardware-Based Firewall

Although programs on your computer systems may offer different levels of firewall protection, the best firewall protection comes from those that are built into your network router. You need to have your IT team create a strong hardware-based firewall for your network router. This will help keep viruses and spyware out of company files.

#4 Encrypt The Information On Your Computer

Finally, you need to encrypt the information on your computer. To start with, you can encrypt the emails that you send out. You can also encrypt the regular data on your computer as well. Encrypting your data means that if someone wants to steal your company's business information, they are going to have to go through a lot more effort in order to steal that information or are just not going to bother to attempt to break into your computer system.

Keeping your businesses data safe will require multiple steps. The four steps above are just the start to ensuring that all the ways you communicate and store information digitally is protected from hackers, virus, malware and spy programs. Contact a company like Silent Security 1 to learn more.

About Me

Security Guards Are Not Just for Celebrities

I had always thought that security guards were only needed by the rich and famous. I never expected to have to hire one for my family until our home was broken into one night. Immediately after the break-in, my children were terrified to go to sleep at night. We found a good security system that couldn't be installed until a few days later. After two sleepless nights, I decided to look into hiring a security guard to stay awake at our home for one night, so I could finally get some rest. I couldn't believe how affordable it was to have a guard at my home for a few hours during the night, and we all got great sleep knowing were safe. I hope I help others who have suffered from home break-ins. A security guard can help you feel secure when waiting for your security system to be installed.
